Description

My memories describe the mental health service as it was twenty years ago when I was in hospital and when I was re-integrated into the community. I have a lot of experience of the mental health service, in hospitals, both private and NHS, and the rehabilitation service, now and as it was when I came out of hospital.

This book is about my memories of the service in those days and how it is now, after the cuts.

I have described my favourite holidays, days out, the drop in centre in Crewe and Nantwich. This service helped me to survive my illness and condition. I am very grateful.

This book is also about the existing service and the future of mental health care.

About the Author

Tim Price was affected by lack of oxygen when he was born in 1973. He was first diagnosed with a mental health problem in 1990, it was called Depression. This was shortly after leaving school and entering Further Education.

People can develop several different kinds of mental health issues or problems; they may need the experience of medical staff in hospitals like the Priory, Leighton, Macclesfield or other Mental Health Units.

Tim later discovered, with the help of the late Dr Lorna Wing, that he had Asperger’s Syndrome.

This was early in 1994.

He received help from staff with experience of mental health problems. The mental health team found appropriate accommodation for Tim. He receives help from carers every week.

Recovery took a long time with help from hospitals, carers from the Mental Health Unit, his friends and family.

He has already had three books published by Chipmunkapublishing called “How to Improve Mental Health” which describes the practical and other activities that he has achieved, since he began to get better, “My Insight into the Computing World” which describes how Tim has used computers over the years, to help him to learn and The Olympic Games, where he recalls the parts that he found interesting.

Tim is normally a positive, happy person and he joins in activities whenever he can.

Tim has enjoyed sport all his life, including the Olympic Games, and supporting various sporting events whenever he can.

Book Extract

Introduction

I have a lot of knowledge and experience of the mental health care services and resources in two hospitals, Altrincham Priory, Manchester and Leighton Hospital, Crewe. Altrincham Priory is a private hospital whereas Leighton Hospital is part of the National Health Service.

I have experience of the rehabilitation services in both areas, care in the community, in Crewe and the surrounding area and the relatively new Direct Payments system.

I thought that my knowledge and experience would encourage people to get better and recover from mental health issues. I therefore decided to write a follow up book to “How to Improve Mental Health” which will describe the excellent service and resources as they were and compare them with the present service.

Aims

The aims of this new book are to describe the services that were in place before the cuts in funding and resources. I have written about my knowledge of what was there before and my memories about the service as it was.

This includes some of the holidays and day trips we went on, the Drop in Centre at 291, Nantwich Road, Crewe and other aspects of what was one of the best mental health services available in the country, the facilities as they were and as they are today.

At the end of the book I will give some ideas of how things could be improved in the future. This will obviously, depend on funding but, in my opinion, will be essential for the recovery of the service.

This will need politicians to make a major change in their policies. MORE ACTION less words (which mean very little).
