In this third collection of poetry, Laura May explores the theme of Agape love, weaving a picture of life and all its daily beauty and sadness. “I feel I have come a long way on my journey to recovery since my fi rst collection, ‘The Shallows’. But I still have a winding road ahead of me, and this book explores that in depth: the chance, the possibility, of a future.”

Ate My Heart

Perhaps I look good?
Good enough
to eat?
It seems so.

Am I a delicacy?
My heart,
Rare,
Can be carved easily these days.

Perhaps the giddy
Scent of weakness
Was too much,
Just too much?

Because in she
swooped,
ducking and diving,
a majestic bird.

Like a monster,
She ate my heart,
Plucked it from its bed,
Held it in her teeth,

Like a fiend,
She licked her lips,
Tasted my blood,
Enjoyed the last
thumping beats,

Of a heart,
My heart,
Not made
For this sweet world.
